In order to participate in the The Europe Direct Victoria Gozo Eco-Schools/YRE/LEAF AWARD Scheme for 2020/2021, students started researching “Climate Change”, and “Marine Life”, some of them already knowledgeable about Marine Life Pollution, having previously worked on a project about the harm single-use plastic is doing to the environment. We named our project: WE are the change! We ARE the change! The kids, with the help of the grown ups, started working on their projects. Since we were still in lockdown, they kept us updated by sending photos of the progress they were making, and of the finished products, which we asked them to keep at home for the time-being, hoping that during scholastic year 2020/2021 they could bring them along to school, so that we could hold an exhibition for all to enjoy. However this also had to be postponed till the end of scholastic year 2021/2022 due to the pandemic. Whilst the students of Years 3, 4 and 5 worked on models, power-points, and charts on the causes and effects of climate change, the year 6 students came up with slogans in favour of having a cleaner environment and recorded themselves expressing these slogans. A video clip was uploaded on the School’s Facebook page to send the students’ message as far and wide as possible. Also during lockdown, some staff members, both teaching and non-teaching, including our cleaners, sewed a large number of cloth bags while they were at home. Throughout the scholastic year, when students went on different outings, they distributed them to people in the street especially those found to be shopping using plastic bags.
