Our Year 4 pupils took part in a half-day ‘Hands on Farming’ activity at the Xewkija Experimental Farm. This programme is intended to familiarise students with our local environment and with the Maltese farming industry. First they followed an interactive lecture on local environment and its protection. They were shown the various products grown in the farm’s five green houses, they visited the animal husbandry section as well as the fruit tree nurseries. They observed the work carried on the farm particularly the different modern irrigation systems that are used. The climax of the visit involved some manual work that the students did themselves. They planted seedlings and propagated some plants by either sowing or cuttings. Every student was also given a packet of Maltese indigenous tree seeds to sow at home.
