Green Flag and Leaf Awards Ceremony

June 6, 2016

Today our school was once again awarded the Green Flag as well as the Leaf award during an awards ceremony at the Presidential Palace.  Representing our school were members of our Students’ Council as well as our Ekoskola co-ordinating teacher, Ms Stephanie Mercieca and our assistant head, Ms Monique Camilleri.

The President of Malta, HE Marie Louise Coleiro Preca, addressed the representatives of the schools who attended this ceremony during which 47 schools were given prestigious awards in recognition of their efforts toward a better quality of life.  She spoke about the work that schools are carrying out as part of the EkoSkola project and how through this work, children are showing us that they want action in favour of the environment and sustainable development.  She maintained that these same children are showing adults that one cannot ignore what needs to be done for the country. The President recalled how last week, during a session of the Children’s Parliament, a motion on climate change was presented. In the motion, children told politicians that they should not just listen but also act.

Mrs Coleiro Preca said children always spoke about the environment when she visited them in school. “During the past two years children have spoken to me about more open spaces, trees and plants, emissions, air and noise pollution and sustainable development.” She also thanked teachers for being catalyst in furthering the teaching started under the EkoSkola project. She noted that participation has increased and today there are 116 schools with 46,400 active participants.
